JOB DESCRIPTION

The Clinical Genomics group is a multidisciplinary team performing clinical genomic tests to determine the genetic cause of different hereditary diseases as members of the Genetic Department at Hospital Germans Trias & Pujol. The Genetic Department has several important responsibilities, including diagnosing and monitoring patients with hereditary diseases, providing genetic counseling to patients and their families, and conducting genetic tests.

Furthermore, the group is a member of the Spanish Reference Center (CSUR) for adult patients with Phakomatoses (Neurofibromatoses, Schwannomatosis, Tuberous Sclerosis, and Von-Hippel Lindau diseases), which is a part of the European Network of Reference Centers (ERN) GENTURIS. Currently we are also the coordinators of international Variant Curation Expert Panel (VCEP) for Neurofibromatoses and Schwannomatosis by ClinGen (NIH) to stablish the variant classification ACMG rules for the genes causing these diseases. The group is also working on developing personalized medicine for this group of patients and developing new clinical guidelines that also take into account patients' emotional and social needs. They are also discovering new prognostic biomarkers, understanding the role of genomic alterations in the development of disease-associated lesions, and implementing various gene therapy strategies to cure these diseases
We are seeking seeking a highly motivated psychologist to join its multidisciplinary team and contribute to clinical care, research, and innovation initiatives focused on individuals with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) and Schwannomatosis.

The successful candidate will be involved in the psychological and neuropsychological assessment, follow-up, and support of adolescent and adult patients, while actively participating in research projects aimed at improving cognitive outcomes, mental health, and quality of life in Phakomatoses.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Neuropsychological Assessment

  • Conduct comprehensive cognitive assessments in patients with Phakomatoses.
  • Administer, score, and interpret standardized neuropsychological tests evaluating: 
    • Executive functions
    • Attention and concentration
    • Memory
    • Processing speed
    • Visuospatial abilities
    • Language and social cognition
  • Prepare clinical reports and individualized recommendations.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of cognitive intervention and rehabilitation programs.

Psychological and Psychosocial Care

  • Assess the psychological and emotional impact of NF1 and Schwannomatosis.
  • Identify symptoms of anxiety, depression, and adjustment difficulties.
  • Evaluate body image concerns, self-esteem, and emotional well-being.
  • Provide individual psychological support and interventions aimed at improving quality of life.
  • Promote adaptive coping strategies related to the physical and psychosocial manifestations of the disease.
  • Collaborate with the clinical genetics team by providing psychological support within genetic counseling and long-term patient care.

Clinical Research

  • Participate in research projects focused on cognition, mental health, body image, and quality of life in NF1 and Schwannomatosis.
  • Maintain and manage clinical and psychological research databases.
  • Analyze and interpret research findings.
  • Contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts, conference presentations, and research reports.
  • Support the integration of psychological and neurocognitive assessment into routine clinical care for NF1 and Schwannomatosis patients

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The following requirements are mandatory:
  • Degree in Psychology.
  • Qualification to practice as a Health Psychologist (Master’s Degree in General Health Psychology or equivalent) or Clinical Psychologist.
  • Experience in psychological and neuropsychological assessment.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in English, including scientific reading and writing.

Desirable

  • Specialized training in Neuropsychology.
  • Experience working with rare diseases, genetic disorders, or neurocutaneous syndromes.
  • Experience in clinical research.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and research data management.
  • Scientific publication record and/or participation in competitive research projects.

This position is intended for specialized technicians in molecular genetics who can progressively become independent in performing clinical genomic testing and also participating in the research projects in line with the group priorities
